The Learning Refuge Paphos

Mary works together with Wendy Burdon, Chairwoman of Caritas Paphos and Rehab Al Hbrat, who are all volunteers offering their skills to support the Learning Refuge in Paphos.

Our volunteer support comes from Cypriots, foreign nationals, members of the Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim, Protestant, Latter-day Saints, Calvary Churches as well as non-practising Christians.

Mary is responsible for recruiting volunteers and meeting the families and children who visit the Learning Refuge, a community “learning and playing together” centre which began to help refugee families, mainly Syrian, who were arriving in Paphos from war torn zones. Mary is also very much engaged in the ideas and organisation of fund raising activities to help towards the rent and running costs.

The Centre provides lessons to help refugee children in Cypriot schools with their homework challenges, improving their Greek language but also providing a safe, peaceful place to be together, to learn through play, build family friendships and participation in community events: art events, theatre etc.

“Our aim is to be involved with local Paphos people as much as possible, to help with integration and teach appreciation of each other’s culture, to build respect by working together, to provide the children with peace and understanding”

We also work to support our families with their particular needs, highlighting these needs to the wider community wherever possible. Such as medical needs, support within emergency situations, lack of food and accommodation problems.

We try to build good relationships with local businesses and media. We also organise events and release press information to help families with difficulties, wherever we can.
